Proposal Time

Your team will be given 2 minutes to pitch (present) your park proposal to the class. Each team member must participate in the presentation. The more you practice for your presentation the more likely you proposal is to be accepted so don't skip practicing.

Presentations will be judged by a committee of a mom, a kindergarten student, a 3rd grade student (not from this school) a sixth grade student, a dad, and a grandparent. Committee selections will not reflect grade.

Step #4

Sketch it up!

You know what you want, now show everyone else by drawing a group sketch that includes the dimensions of length and width as well as total perimeter needed for each area of your park.

Double check your safety awareness here we don't want little billy getting kicked as he goes down the slide by Susie on the swings.

Let your sketch do more convincing than your words!

Step #3

Playing at the Park

Now that you know which park you are redesigning and what members of your community would like to see at that park it is time to design.

Each team member will need to pick out one activity area or piece of equipment to include in your park proposal. Each of you will need to make sure that your piece or required space
a)fits inside the park perimeter
b)doesn't overlap with other pieces
c)and determine the perimeter needed for your area to keep people safe when visiting different areas of the park.

Remember, you have a budget so be careful your combined pieced don't go over 30,000 dollars for the WHOLE park.

Visit this playground equipment site for prices, sizes, and ideas.

Step #2

Collect Data and Create a Graph

To complete this step each member of your team is responsible for talking to 10 people they know (not in the same grade at school) and collecting data on what those citizens would like to see in the park.

Rejoin as a team with each member's collected data and visit
Created A Graph Classic
to create a graph that uses all the data collected.

Review the rubric to see how you will be graded on your graph and data.

Step #1

The first task you are assigned is to determine which park your team will be redesigning.

1) To do this each member of your team will choose a park from

After choosing your park use the table below to get the length and width you will need to determine the perimeter. If you need help remembering how to find perimeter you can check http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol1/perimeter.html

2) Determine the size/perimeter of the park you chose.

Now that you now the size of the park you chose, use the information on the city park page as well as checking to google maps to

3) Formulate one good reason why that park should be redesigned.

To use google maps enter the address of your park on the site below.
*Do Not Forget City and State!!!
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=ll

5) After all of your team members have determined the size and reason to redesign their park, come back together.

6) Give each member of the team two minutes to show the size of their park in any manner they find necessary as well as describe their reason(s) for why the park they chose should be redesigned. (You could use a sketch showing perimeter, could be just the perimeter number or any other way you feel necessary to help your team understand its size.)

*To ensure you receive credit for this task please fill out this form on your park and submit to the teacher at the end of this task.

7) Based on your team’s findings decide together on which of the three parks is in the most need of your attention. If agreement is not reached within the time allotted by your teacher you will be assigned a park at random which you will use for the rest of the project.
*As you will need your reasons for redesigning this park when you present your proposal it is suggested that you write them down so that you have them later.
